Roman sipped a drink, staring out the window into the darkness, deep in thought.

The crew had suffered numerous recent setbacks, and the cost was stacking up.

It was an uncomfortable feeling not being in control, and one he wasn’t used to.

Before they aligned with Teflon, their operation was small-scale, but expertly run. With Keith’s ferocity and Roman’s sharpness, they kept their people on point and things running smoothly.

Lately, Roman had begun wondering whether Keith had lost his touch. The ferocity was still there, but there was no sense to it. It was like a boiling pot, liable to spill over at any point. He struggled to see his friend as the asset he once was, which posed a significant problem. Between strategising how to beat the Dunns and placating those closest to him who wanted blood, he was spreading himself too thin.

Massaging his temples, he blew out a breath.

Chapeltown wasn’t just his desire; Roman believed it was his right. When Teflon left the streets behind, Roman and Keith seemed like natural successors. They were young, hungry, experienced and ready to make their move. When fate conspired against them, and they were arrested, their claim to the streets was seemingly cast in doubt. But not in Roman’s mind. As far as he was concerned, Chapeltown belonged to him and Keith.

He wished the Dunns had taken their offer and moved out, but he understood why they didn’t. In the streets, maintaining pride was as important as making money. In their position, he would have done the same.

The main problem was that they weren’t bargaining from a position of strength. Keith had surrendered the element of surprise, and it had left them on the back foot. Since their meeting, multiple spots had been robbed. The stolen drugs gouged mercilessly into their profits, and morale was rapidly disintegrating. Roman wasn’t sure where the Dunns procured their information from, but it was impressive. There seemed to be very few spots unknown to them, and, given their limited firepower, it left them uncomfortably exposed.

Roman reached into his pocket, retrieving a slip of paper that he unfolded and flattened on the coffee table. Reaching into his other pocket, he pulled out a pen, clicking it and exposing the ballpoint. On the paper were various addresses and dates. Roman moved his pen over them as he read, shaking his head as he read Spencer Mount x2.

Arriving at the bottom of the list, he added three more addresses.
